Fishing in Alaska

The nearby Copper River is world-renowned for yielding the best tasting salmon in the world! Commerical gillnet fishing vessels can often be seen floating by on the Eyak River.

Fisherman can find great fishing in the nearby Eyak river. We offer boat rentals, a place to clean your catch, and freezer space to store your fish. If you can't wait to taste those fish, we also offer an area for cookouts and campfires.

Even though 2005 season at the Eyak River was slower and later than normal it appears it was still the "hot spot" for silvers in South Central Alaska.

Fish surveys results are in
By Ken Hodges

U.S. Forest Service sportfishing questionnaires for the 2005 season showed up in Cordova mailboxes last week, but what about the results of the 2004 surveys? Fisheries biologist Dirk Lang has added up the numbers and has the answers.

Based on interviews of nonresidents leaving at the airport and ferry terminal, along with the mail-in survey from Cordova residents, Lang estimates 19,415 coho (silver) salmon were harvested by sport fishers in 2004. This includes fish caught in the Tsiu, Kaliakh and Katalla rivers where there are sportfishing lodges, as well as from local streams like Eyak River, Ibeck Creek and Alaganik Slough. About half of the nonresidents are flying out to the lodges, while the rest fish locally.

Nonresident anglers harvested an estimated 14,477 coho salmon, while Cordova residents harvested 4,938. The hot spot for the 2004 season was Eyak River, where an estimated 8,267 coho were harvested. The Tsiu River contributed 3,155 fish. The rest were caught mainly in Alaganik Slough, Fleming Spit and Ibeck Creek.

Planning a visit to Alaska? You need to know when your best chance is to see a deer down the scope of your gun or feel a fish tugging at that line.

April & May offer bear hunting, king salmon fishing, and Cordova's annual shorebird festival.

June brings the red salmon into the Eyak River.

In July, the reds are still running, and they're joined by pink salmon and dog salmon.

Fishing for silvers can be done in August and September. This is a good time to hunt for duck and bear as well.
