Fish surveys results are in
By Ken Hodges
U.S. Forest Service sportfishing questionnaires for the 2005 season showed up in Cordova mailboxes last week, but what about the results of the 2004 surveys? Fisheries biologist Dirk Lang has added up the numbers and has the answers.
Based on interviews of nonresidents leaving at the airport and ferry terminal, along with the mail-in survey from Cordova residents, Lang estimates 19,415 coho (silver) salmon were harvested by sport fishers in 2004. This includes fish caught in the Tsiu, Kaliakh and Katalla rivers where there are sportfishing lodges, as well as from local streams like Eyak River, Ibeck Creek and Alaganik Slough. About half of the nonresidents are flying out to the lodges, while the rest fish locally.
Nonresident anglers harvested an estimated 14,477 coho salmon, while Cordova residents harvested 4,938. The hot spot for the 2004 season was Eyak River, where an estimated 8,267 coho were harvested. The Tsiu River contributed 3,155 fish. The rest were caught mainly in Alaganik Slough, Fleming Spit and Ibeck Creek.
